It’s
difficult to get to know this disorder in time, as the affected person usually
doesn’t feel, how serious the trouble is. Eating disorders can be hidden
even from family and friends for a long time.
At the beginning, anorexia or bulimia can be seem as a plain diet or a starting healthy way of eating. It mainly affects young girls, but the age group expands and boys are no exception. First of all, the affected ones are reducing their food doses than skipping main meal. In the meantime they’re extremely training, until complete exhaustion. Their environment is amazed at how they have all their power for it. But their willpower can be huge and unfortunately they can use it against themselves. Physical symptoms are characterized by a sudden drop in body weight, and the loss of menses. Constant sensitivity to cold, thin skin and hair can be noticed. Some of the patients vomits him/herself regularly or tries with purging, in these cases dental erosion and inflammation of the esophagus occurs.
Their behaviour has changed: isolation and depression appears. The patient avoids common meals, but prepares food for others with pleasure. Till anorexic persons typically have increased self-control and self-discipline, than bulimic patients suffering from devouring meal, are mainly labile, impulsive personalities. It is a common misconception that the cause of eating disorder is only the achievement of a slimmer body, suggested by the model world and the media. In some of the cases it’s true, but the reasons are far deeper and wider. The overly close relationship with parents in childhood, unsuccessful attempts at becoming independent, increased expectations and maximalism are often in the background. There is no other way to demonstrate self-reliance, than eating! Excessive control is exerted over it by the patient of eating disorder, and then paradoxically, she/he loses independence completely - as becoming so weak that she/he will even not be able to take care of her/himself.
The solution is a
professional, psychiatric therapy in every case. In light cases, no
hospitalization is required, but in serious condition it’s unescapable. It is
important to know, that anorexia and bulimia are serious diseases,
but curable ones. The sooner the proper treatment starts, the greater the
chance of complete physical and mental recovery. If you suspect that you or
your family member or friend is affected by eating disorder, do not leave at
that!
